Hey everyone,
I want to welcome you to the start of something truly special: the blog for El Rincón Borikén!
I’m Lissette Berrios, the founder, and I want to share the simple, deeply personal reason why this organization exists.
The Problem We Can’t Ignore
As a Puerto Rican born and growing up here in the States, I noticed something sad: we’re forgetting the music, the history, and the traditions that make us who we are.
It’s easy to let go of the roots when life gets busy. For many families—children, teens, and adults—the old ways fade. The stories of the resilient jíbaros (the strong people of the land), the ancient Taíno history, and even the simple joy of our language and traditions often get lost. When I looked for places to reconnect and learn, they were too far or just didn't have that specific spark I was looking for.
This isn't just about history; it's about identity.
My Personal Wake-Up Call
I remember growing up, my grandmother tried to share the culture, but as decades changed, I felt that connection slipping away. After she passed, I realized I was feeling less Puerto Rican and more... simply "American."
That feeling was my wake-up call. I decided I had to fully engage myself in our culture and history. But when I searched for local organizations that offered the deep traditions and cultural education I craved, they were nowhere to be found.
That’s when I realized: If I can’t find the place, I need to build it.
Our Simple, Clear Mission
That moment is why El Rincón Borikén was born.
Our mission is simple: To connect our community to the vibrant history of Puerto Rico—including the ancient Taíno roots and the resilient jíbaro culture.
We do this by hosting fun, hands-on events and by supporting our incredible Boricua artisans through the sale of their beautiful, handcrafted goods.
Small Moves, Big Impact: What’s Next
We’re starting small, but we plan to grow our impact quickly. Here are just a few ways we’re bringing the cultural past to our future:
Sharing the Gift: We will host an annual toy and clothing drive centered around the beautiful Tres Reyes (Three Kings) tradition.
The Taíno Table: We plan to set up a small language station to help people learn the Taíno language.
Dominoes & Friendly Competition: We will have a dedicated domino table where children and teens can be taught how to play this traditional game. Once they've mastered the basics, we hope to host friendly community tournaments with prizes! This is all about fun, connection, and passing on a beloved tradition.
Ready to Build This Community Together?
I built this nonprofit for everyone who feels that pull back to the island. If you want to reclaim your identity, teach your children the heritage, or simply celebrate with us, you belong here.
Here’s how you can help us grow this movement right now:
For Donors: Every dollar goes directly to supporting our events, educational materials, and artisan partnerships. Click here to contribute to our mission.
For Partners: If you are a Latin, Hispanic, or Puerto Rican organization, let’s talk! We want to work with you to make our combined impact even stronger. Send me an email at comunidad@xn--elrincnboriken-qob.org to collaborate.
Thank you for being here. Let the journey begin!
