The Sweet History of the Puerto Rican Limber 🇵🇷🍧

If you grew up in Puerto Rico or in a Puerto Rican neighborhood, you already know that nothing beats the summer heat quite like a cold, icy limber.
But have you ever wondered where this delicious treat got its unique name?
A Cool Story from 1928
Unlike traditional ice cream, a limber isn't scooped—it is frozen solid right inside a plastic cup. The history goes back to 1928, when a famous American pilot named Charles Lindbergh flew his airplane to Puerto Rico on a goodwill tour.
The story goes that when he arrived, the local people welcomed him with a frozen cup of fresh fruit juice. Lindbergh loved it! Because the frozen treat was hard and icy, the locals jokingly said it was "tan duro como Lindbergh" (as tough and solid as Lindbergh). Over time, the pronunciation shifted in the community, and the name officially became "Limber."
Traditional Flavors Made with Love
Traditionally, limbers are made using natural tropical fruits and rich flavors. You flip the ice over in the cup and eat it from the bottom up! It’s a sweet, nostalgic taste of the Island that reminds so many of us of childhood, family gatherings, and warm sunny days.
Coming this June to El Rincón Borikén!
We are so excited to bring this sweet tradition right here to our community space! Starting in June, we will be selling authentic, handmade limbers right here at the center.
Whether you want to relive a favorite childhood memory or try your very first one, we invite you to come by, cool off, and share a taste of our heritage.
